Organizational overview

The Transition Accelerator is a new pan-Canadian organization that fosters and drives transitions to novel system configurations that provide multiple superior business and societal outcomes, including emissions reductions. The Accelerator’s initial priorities are advancing Canada’s Hydrogen Economy, Electrification and Grid Integration, Personal Mobility, and Decarbonizing Buildings. 


The Transition Accelerator is staffing a full-time Electrification Analyst to support the advancement of its Electrification Strategy to accelerate the development of viable pathways to a Net-Zero electricity system in Canada.

Responsibilities and Focus Areas

The Electrification Analyst will:

  • Conduct research on relevant electricity market topics, including market design, policy, regulations, and electricity infrastructure projects
  • Develop models and tools to carry out technical and economic analyses of energy systems involving electricity systems and electrification of end-use applications
  • Conduct primary and secondary research on topics related to electricity system planning, electrification of end-uses, and net-zero transitions
  • Conduct analysis of energy and market data to help understand existing policies and programs and inform the development of new ones (e.g. fuel standards, carbon pricing, rebates, etc.)
  • Review the reports and understand the analytical work that has been completed to date by The Transition Accelerator, and help advance this body of work by contributing to the preparation and publication of future reports
  • Work in a team environment to develop and critically assess promising pathways and deployment strategies
  • Identify and prioritize pathway opportunities and challenges
  • Prepare well-documented technical reports and modeling tools that could be used by project developers, policy makers, investors and researchers to explore opportunities as well as policy and investment decisions
  • Draw on the insights generated within the Accelerator and elsewhere to build scenario models to 2050, thereby informing decision makers regarding the required policies and investments as well as the societal benefits
  • Create impactful visualizations to communicate the Accelerator’s results and insights
  • Contribute to the publication of results in reports, presentations and web-based communications, and be primary drafter of reports and presentation

Qualifications/Expertise Required

 The successful applicant will have:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, but ideally a graduate degree and/or work experience in a sector involved with energy production or use
  • Demonstrated expertise in techno-economic analysis, energy systems modeling
  • Skills in secondary and primary research
  • Proven expertise in using Microsoft Excel (or other tools) for the creation of sophisticated models in a way that can be understood and used by others
  • Ability to read, understand, evaluate and communicate, in a timely fashion, the results of published reports from a wide range of disciplines related to energy systems and energy systems change
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with repetitive tasks as necessary
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent skills in developing and documenting the case for and against a logical, well-researched argument that could be built into a scenario model and associated transition pathway
  • Good verbal and great written communication skills
  • Must be comfortable working as part of a diverse research team and have good interpersonal skills

The following skills would be beneficial:

  • Integrating technical and economic analyses
  • Work experience in the area of systems modeling or strategic planning in government, industry or non-governmental organizations
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in the creation of effective data visualizations

Location and Travel

Work will be conducted in virtual environment. This position is full-time (approximately 40 hours a week), located anywhere in Canada.
