To reach net-zero carbon by 2050, the building sector, which represents 10% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Quebec, must abandon fossil fuels within a very short time horizon. The maturity of technologies to decarbonize buildings allows the sector to resolutely engage on this track with a tight schedule to compensate the difficulties met by other sectors, like transport. The goal of this document is to identify the challenges, levers, and obstacles to decarbonizing buildings in Quebec, and more specifically commercial and institutional buildings, still large consumers of natural gas and other fossil fuels.
